end of first round

Messaggio da rubiera »

This is the last post for the first round. I will add material in the future, but I consider this range of postings to be sufficient to show that there are something like 300 issues, and that if anyone is interested in collecting this series, there is plenty of fun to be had.

Please visit the blog for this issue in English in the future:

and if you can read Spanish, the sub-forum for this issue in 'Filatelia Argentina'

thanks!!!!

A basic exhibit of this series

Messaggio da rubiera »

I have designed what I think constitutes a basic grouping of this series. These 48 pages would fit completely in a 24-page double-side presentation book. The collection consists of 320 items. For this exercise I will consider all incoming material game for this collection. I have just received the first item.

Here is the scheme for the first half of the presentation book

Here is the cover. 1 down, 319 items to go.

And here is a beautiful cover with three 50cNOPs, properly dated 1948, when most of these stamps were first printed/issued. Notice that the thickness of the paper causes the perforation machine to choke.

Messaggio da rubiera »

I find two watermarks, each with variations: horizontal, small RA on very porous white paper; and vertical, with large, neat RA. I find both diffuse as well as clear. I find two types of background, one almost continuous, and another with lighter and lighter bands surrounding the sub-continent.

Una pregunta en tema de filigrana:

Pushed by the interesting study of our friend Tony/Rubiera, I examined my argentinian stamps: just few dozens, washed out by my father - many years ago - from letters written by some relatives living in Argentina. I am particularly interested in the two type of watermark with the sun and the letters ''RA''. Owing to their asymmetric shape, it seems to me thet we can find 16 different positions of the RA letters. I draw a little sketch (I apologize for the very poor quality) to clarify my hypothesys. I would like to know if all these positions are really possible to find on aergentinian issues.

Riccardo:

The combinations you mention make sense, except that the way these stamps were printed, the inverted watermarks were not supposed to happen. By this I mean that the RA can be in four positions for small format, and four positions for large format stamps, but the mirror image of these is not supposed to happen. When it does, it means that the plate was used to print on the wrong side of the sheet. The RA should be positive from the front of the stamp always. If you have any where the RA is negative from the front of the sheet, I would like to see an image. I have not come across any of these!

Am I making sense?

Dear Tony, thank for your answer. My sketch was purely theoretical. Following your indications I controlled part of my stamps and, in fact, I found only four positions, all with the RA letter ''positive'' from the front of stamps. I took as a model the positions of a classical asymmetric italian watermark (the winged wheel).
But there is a stamp you posted on the 31 th of august whose watermark seems wrong to me (it appears positive from the back)

Or I'm doing a mistake?

Yes! Thanks for looking at these so carefully. This is indeed the type of variety that I was mentioning, but I need to verify that I did not accidentally flip this image during editing.

5p1L "Lobster" plate variety

Messaggio da rubiera »

Looks like there is only one of these in the plate, and because it shares a scratch upper rite with a more common variety of the same era, it is possible that this is a very late state of the plate. The watermark looks like the 1L3, with square RA.

Immagine

It has the following flaws

Period upper left edge

Small scratch below 'REPUBLICA'

The scratch it shares with a more common plate variety

And another scratch, this one in the background...truly a great plate variety
